Cigarette collecting box, World War II
Add to album

Cigarette container of cardboard with a hinged lid and three compartments, c. 1940.

Under the auspices of the City of Glasgow Central War Relief Fund, people could donate cigarettes, by placing them in this box, to injured soldiers in hospital. Written on the box is 'Cigarettes for soldiers in hospital - spare one - thank you!'.

At this time the health risks of smoking and the impact on the fitness of the body were not as well known as they are today. For the soldier, cigarettes offered short-term relief from the tribulations of war.
