Waterloo Medal of Ensign David Baird
Add to album

This was the first medal to be awarded by the British Crown to all troops, regardless of rank. The Duke of Wellington suggested that it be awarded to all who fought at Quatre Bras - 16 and 17 June - and Waterloo - 18 June 1815.

It was also the first campaign medal to be awarded to the next-of-kin of men killed in action, and the first medal to have the recipient's name impressed on it by machine.

Ensign David Baird was the nephew of General Sir David Baird.
