Units of the British Army were stationed in Ireland on peace-keeping duties throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Scots Greys, their motto 'Second to none', distinguished themselves at Waterloo. They are now amalgamated into the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys).

Michael Angelo Hayes (1820-1877) was an Irish painter, born in Waterford. Best known for his racing and military subjects, in 1842 he was appointed Military Painter-in-Ordinary to the Lord Lieutenant.
