Medal commemorating Marshall MacDonald's visit to Great Britain

French medal of Marshal MacDonald, Duke of Tarente, commemorating his visit to Britain in 1825. He visited Scotland, including South Uist where his father Neil MacEachan was born. MacEachan changed his name to MacDonald when he went to France.

Made of copper with a coating of bronze. The inscription reads Armées du Nord, de Rome, de Naples, de Réserve, des Grisons, d'Italie, d'Allemagne, de Catalogne, de Russie, de Prusse, de La Loire. Né a Sédan le 17 nov. 1765.

Jacques Etienne Joseph Alexandre MacDonald was born in Sedan, France, the son of a Scot who had followed Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Charles Edward Stewart or Bonnie Prince Charlie) into exile. He became a Marshal of France under Napoleon and was created Duke of Tarente, now Taranto, in Italy.
