Hogmanay gift, South African War, 1900

Tins like this were sent to troops serving during the Second South African War, 1899 - 1902. This one contained tobacco, but similar ones were used for chocolate.

Gift boxes were sent to troops at Christmas and New Year and contained things like tobacco, cigarettes, sweets and chocolate. Princess Mary's Christmas gift for Indian troops in 1914 included chillies and nuts.

This gift was sent by the Scottish Regiments Gift Fund. The word Hogmanay derives from the Norman French 'hoguinanne', 'last day of the year'.
