Colour caricature of 'The Battle of Vittoria' published by T. Sidebotham. A satirical print of the 1813 battle, showing the rout of the French with British soldiers at the forefront.

This print reinforced national stereotypes; the English capturing the 'roast beef', the cowering Frenchmen and the strong, ruddy cheeked Highlanders. The Highlander towards the right uses the word 'loon' (man or boy) suggesting he is from the North East.

The Battle of Vitoria (now spelt with one 't') was part of the Peninsular War between Wellington's British, Portuguese and Spanish troops against the French. The French were routed, and Napoleon's domination over Spain was subsequently ended.
