Quartermaster Sergeant 'Foxy' Paton

Photograph of Quartermaster Sergeant Paton of the 79th Highlanders, c. 1850, nicknamed 'Foxy'. He is shown holding the military broadsword.

Because they controlled supplies such as food, quartermasters often had opportunities to exercise entrepreneurial talents, which encouraged others to regard them as particularly cunning. This may have been the origin of his nickname.
