Army cooks at Aldershot

Cooks of the 1st Battalion, The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) at Aldershot, 1883. Clues to their trade can be seen in the cleaver held by the man seated second from the right, and the rabbit dangling at the extreme right.

The cooks have taken time from an off-duty period in which they were enjoying some beer and a smoke, to pose for a photograph.

Aldershot was the Headquarters for line regiments of the British Army.
