Pen and watercolour drawing of the H.M.S. Edinburgh, by Andrew C. Jeffreys

Pen and watercolour drawing of the H.M.S. Edinburgh, c. 1864-66. The ship's engines developed 450 horsepower, she mounted 60 guns and could carry 620 officers and men. Launched in 1811, she was converted to steam in 1846 and broken up in 1866.

H.M.S. Edinburgh was the third warship to bear that name. In 1999 H.M.S. Edinburgh, the 6th of that name, is a stretch Type 42 Guided Missile Destroyer, launched in 1983.

The painter Andrew C. Jeffreys was an officer in the Royal Navy, serving in Scotland as an Assistant Paymaster in the 1860s; he probably drew the ship while she was berthed at Leith c. 1864 - 1866.
