Add to album

Captain Robert Cunninghame was photographed in the Crimea by Roger Fenton, whose vivid images of the everyday experience of war were a revelation to the British public.

Roger Fenton took up to 360 photographs during the Crimean War. Before the work of men like Fenton, the public at home had to rely on written descriptions or artists' impressions for images of the war.

Fenton practised as a lawyer before becoming involved in photography. As well as the Crimea images, he was Photographer for the British Museum and was an important landscape photographer.
