Photograph from Queen Victoria's photo album of Piper Muir on his return from the Crimea, 1856. The number 'XLII' can just be seen on the pipe banner: the 42nd was also known as The Black Watch.

This photograph was copied by the French military painter Edouard Détaille.

Photographs from Queen Victoria's photograph album 'Crimean Heroes' were to provide inspiration for both French and British military painters for the rest of the century.
