Photograph from Queen Victoria's photo album of wounded soldiers of the Scots Fusilier Guards. The soldiers were convalescing in England following wounds sustained during service in the Crimean War (1854-56).

The central figure displays the distinctive arm badges of his rank of Colour-Sergeant.

Queen Victoria was an enthusiastic patron of the art of photography, the popularity and success of which in Britain owed a great deal to royal encouragement.
