Photograph of the 1st Battalion, The Black Watch in front of the Sphinx and the pyramids, said to have been taken after the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir, c. 1883.

The Battle of Tel-el-Kebir took place on 13 September 1882. The Black Watch, and the Cameron and Gordon Highlanders formed part of the Highland Brigade created for the 1882 Egyptian Campaign.

As the frontiers of the British Empire increasingly expanded in the late 19th century, many Scottish regiments served in Africa.
