The Regiment served during the Indian Mutiny of 1857, being described as the 'Saviours of India'. To the right of the picture is Private Henry Ward who is wearing a Victoria Cross won at Lucknow in 1857.

According to the London Gazette, Ward received his award 'for his gallant and devoted conduct in having..remained with the dooly [litter or stretcher] of Captain Havelock [before escorting him] through a very heavy fire of ordnance and musketry'.
