Coloured lithograph showing the 93rd (Highland) Regiment, entitled 'The Thin Red Line' by Robert Gibb, 1881. Printed by the magazine, 'Black and White'.

Following their conduct at the Battle of Balaklava in 1854, during the Crimean War, the 93rd (Highland) Regiment were described by William Howard Russell from The Times as 'a thin red streak tipped with a line of steel'. This was subsequently and persistently misquoted as 'the thin red line'.
