Watercolour by Orlando Norie of the 42nd Regiment of Foot during the Indian Mutiny, 1857

Watercolour of the 42nd Regiment of Foot during the Indian Mutiny by Orlando Norie. Their uniform has been adapted to include the 'Kepi' style cap to combat the intense heat.

In April 1857 Sepoy troops (Indians officered by Europeans) of the Bengal Army started to mutiny against British rule. Under the command of Sir Colin Campbell the 42nd marched to relieve the town of Cawnpore and then in 1858 stormed the siege at Lucknow.

Orlando Norie (1832 - 1901) was a member of an Edinburgh family of painters and decorators. He kept a studio at Aldershot and was a prolific and popular painter of military subjects, illustrating military costumes and scenes of regimental life.
