Oil painting entitled 'Under Orders' by Robert Gemmell Hutchinson, 1882. Black Watch soldiers make final goodbyes to members of their families in a barrack room of Edinburgh Castle, prior to leaving for Egypt in 1882.

Three generations can be seen, from a soldier's father wearing his rifle volunteer uniform and medals, to wives, girlfriends and small children. The coloured print on the wall is of John Everett Millais's 'Cherry Ripe', a sentimental favourite.

The Egyption revolt of 1881 was organised by Colonel Arabi Pasha against Britain and France who controlled the Suez Canal and administered the finances of Egypt. The Black Watch fought at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir, losing 50 men killed or wounded.
