Lithograph of Gordon Highlanders' officers' mess, behind the Somme front
Add to album

Coloured lithograph of the Officer's Mess of the Gordon Highlanders, situated in a bare dancing hall of a village inn, behind the Somme front, 1916.

By the shadowy candlelight, officers of the Gordon Highlanders consult a map, possibly planning future tactics and battleplans for the men under their command. Towards the far right an officer in trews appears to have his thoughts elsewhere.

Sir David Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) was born in Partick, Glasgow. His ability to record minute detail and his talent to observe accurately made him well suited to becoming the first official British war artist in 1916.
