Add to album

Coloured lithograph of Ansdell's 'Fight for the Standard' showing Sergeant Charles Ewart, 2nd (or Royal North British) Regiment of Dragoons, capturing the standard of the French 45th infantry regiment at the Battle of Waterloo.

The painting from which this lithograph is taken was an heroic interpretation painted in 1847, the year after Ewart's death, by Richard Ansdell.

Ewart described his efforts to retain the French standard in forthright language: 'I cut him [the standard bearer] through the head...one of their Lancers threw his lance at me but missed...I cut him through the chin upwards'.
