Soldiers and their wives at Edinburgh Castle

This photograph of soldiers of the 92nd Regiment shows not only the soldiers themselves but also their families. Wives and children often accompanied the regiment, even on campaign when they marched with the baggage, giving rise to the slang expression.

D.O. Hill's pictures are among the earliest to be taken of Scots soldiers. Soldiers were popular at this time and they were deemed to be suitable subjects for early pioneer work in photography.

David Octavius Hill (1801-1870) began his career as a painter but became interested in photography whilst planning a painting of the signing of the Deed of Demission. In 1843 he met Robert Adamson and in less than five years they produced 1800 photographs.
