Watercolour of a private of the Cameron Highlanders

Watercolour of a private of the Cameron Highlanders, sitting at a table reading a letter, c. 1890.

Thanks to the higher standard of parish-school education in Scotland compared to the rest of Britain, most Scots soldiers were literate and able to make and receive correspondence with family and friends.

The Cameron Highlanders were raised on the outbreak of war with France, by Alan Cameron of Erracht in 1793, recruits coming from the Lochaber area and the Lowlands. In 1890, they were in Edinburgh.
