Coloured drawing of a soldier of the Royal Ecossais and his wife

Coloured drawing of a soldier of the Régiment Royal Ecossais in camp, drinking wine with his wife, c. 1757. The drawing is a copy of one held in the Musée de l'Armée, Paris.

It was not unusual for wives and children to accompany soldiers on campaign. This Regiment was raised as part of the French Army by Royal Decree on 3 September 1743, and was embodied in August 1744.

The first Colonel was Louis Drummond, Duke of Perth. Drummond was killed at Culloden and his brother, Lord John Drummond, became Colonel. In 1745 the Regiment fought at the Battle of Fontenoy, notable because Highlanders fought on both sides.
