Silver medal of the Army Temperance Association, India

The medal is in the shape of a Maltese Cross, with an elephant in the centre. It was awarded for accomplishing 8 years' temperance.

During the 19th century the growth of evangelical Christianity nurtured the growth of Temperance Associations in both civilian life and the armed services.

The Army in India was particularly prone to the effects of idleness-induced alcohol abuse and this led to the foundation of the Army temperance association, India, in the 1860s.
