Studio photograph of a private of the 78th Regiment of Foot in Heavy Marching Order
Add to album

Carbon photograph of a private of the 78th (Highlanders) Regiment of Foot (Ross-shire Buffs) in Heavy Marching Order, 1860. This is what a foot soldier was expected to wear and carry when engaged in combat. He has an oilskin cover on his feathered bonnet, as worn in wet weather.

Although this is obviously a studio shot, the photographer has gone to some lengths to make the scene as vivid as possible, posing the soldier against a painted backdrop of an outdoor scene, kneeling and preparing to fire.

When the Indian Mutiny broke out in 1857, the 78th had been nearly at the end of its tour of Foreign service, so at the end of the campaign it was one of the first regiments to return home.
