Two pioneers of the 78th Regiment of Foot in full dress. The squad consisted of ten men, besides the sergeant, who were selected from soldiers proficient in various trades.

The main task of the pioneer was to lay out the soldiers' camp. When laying out the camp, pioneers would have to dig latrines, fix standpipes, remedy building defects and in general maintain the upkeep of the camp.
