After the painting by W. Skeoch Cumming
Coloured print of the 'Raising of the Gordons' (Gordon Highlanders) by William Skeoch Cumming. A romanticised view of the Highlands typical of the later 19th century, showing Jean, Duchess of Gordon on horseback passing on a favour to a new recruit.
In February 1794 when the French declared war on Britain and Holland, the patriotic Duke of Gordon offered to raise a regiment for the Government. The Duke and his son, the Marquess of Huntly, took a personal interest in the recruiting process.
According to a romantic tale, Jean Duchess of Gordon gave a kiss to all the men who enlisted in the regiment. This view of the Highlands is a typically sentimental view of Scotland; we can see a collie dog, thistles and full tartan dress worn by all.
