Photograph of General Sir Colin Campbell, by Roger Fenton, taken in the Crimea, and published on 25 March 1856 by T. Agnew and Sons. Born in Glasgow on 29 January 1792, Campbell was one of Scotland's greatest soldiers. The son of a Glasgow carpenter, he rose from the rank of Ensign to Field-Marshall, and became Lord Clyde.

Campbell led the Highland Brigade during the Crimean War, taking victory at the Battle of Alma, and defending the port of Balaclava with 'The Thin Red Line'. He relieved Cawnpore and Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny. Campbell was proud of his Highland soldiers, and was often suspected of favouring them with opportunities to shine in battle, and they returned his affection.

Fenton was the first independent war photographer, taking almost 360 photographs during the Crimean War. Before the work of men like Fenton, the public at home relied on written descriptions or artists' drawings for impressions of men like Colin Campbell.
