Print of the Battle of Alexandria, 21 March 1801

The Black Watch, or 42nd Regiment, was present at the Battle of Alexandria and can be seen in the foreground. Cannon are in action, hand-to-hand fighting is taking place and muskets are being used in a variety of ways.

The print was drawn by Lieutenant William Willermin, who was present at the battle, so it may be a less glamourised representation than was often the case.

The Battle of Alexandria was fought between the British Expeditionary Force under General Sir Ralph Abercromby and the French under General Menou. The French were defeated but General Abercromby was mortally wounded.
