Portrait of the Misses Maxwell, General Francis Dundas, Sir Henry Jardine, Sir Robert Dundas, Captain Hay, and the Earl of Eglinton in high military fashion. by John Kay.

The two young ladies are in the uniform of the West Lowland Fencibles, of which their father was Lieutenant-Colonel. The officers were familiar Edinburgh figures of the day.

John Kay was born near Edinburgh in 1742. A keen artist from childhood, he was a barber until 1785 when he became a full-time engraver and painter of miniatures. His portraits of Edinburgh characters are vivid and unmistakable.
