Blue linen bag

This blue linen bag was designed by Jessie Newbery and stitched by Rita Allen about 1912.

The border of stylised sunflowers and leaves is sewn with silk thread.

Jessie Newbery, 1864-1948, was an artist capable of working with glass, metals or mosaic, but she is best remembered for her outstanding needlework. Good design was important in each piece.
