This double-barrelled air pump was used by Professor Joseph Black at Edinburgh University.

One of a collection of apparatus and instruments from Edinburgh University used by Professors Black, Hope and Gregory - a double-barrelled air pump in the form in which it was first made by Hauksbee

Joseph Black, 1728-1799, was Professor of Chemistry at both Glasgow and Edinburgh University. He worked upon a quantitative chemical analysis of the processes of boiling, melting and freezing and developed the theories of latent heat and specific heat.
