This presentation trowel was used for laying the foundation stone of the Thistle Chapel at St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh on 6 November 1909. The chapel was designed by the architect Sir Robert Lorimer.

The trowel is made of silver and its handle is probably ivory.

Sir Robert Lorimer, 1864-1929, was an important architect. He designed the Thistle Chapel, St. Giles for the Order of the Thistle. The chapel provides a place where the Monarch and Scottish Knights may meet.
