Add to album

This fiddle case is said to have belonged to Niel Gow, a fiddler and composer of traditional Scottish dance music in the 18th century.

The case is made of wood covered with cow hide.

Niel Gow, 1727-1807, performed widely for the upper classes of society through his patron, the Duke of Atholl. Gow was a gifted fiddler who did much to preserve and promote traditional Scottish music through publishing music with his son Nathaniel.
