Add to album

This dry gas meter was made by Alder & Mackay of Edinburgh, Bradford and London. It was invented by Mr Anderson in 1900 at a time when less wealthy people began to have access to gas for the first time.

The meter is fitted with a coin slot to provide prepayment facilities.

William Murdoch,1754-1839, is considered to be the inventor of gas lighting. He was an engineer at Boulton and Watt's Soho factory in Birmingham which produced gas appliances until 1814. Murdoch's invention was developed by others, like Mr. Anderson.
