Linen book cover by Jessie Newbery

This linen cover was embroidered by the artist, Jessie Newbery. It was for a magazine named 'The Studio' which regularly showed work by Newbery and her contemporaries.

This greyish cream-coloured linen book cover is decorated with four rosettes and an inscription.

Jessie Newbery, 1864-1948, worked with glass, metals and mosaic, but she is best remembered for her outstanding needlework. As a result of her influence a Department of Embroidery was established at the Glasgow School of Art.
