Map of Thomas Telford's work in Scotland

This map of Scotland is taken from 'Atlas to the Life of Thomas Telford' - a collection of drawings. It was published in 1838 to celebrate the innovative designs of Thomas Telford, civil engineer.

This map illustrates many of the Telford's projects in Scotland including the the roads and bridges he built in the Highlands between 1801 and 1821.

Thomas Telford, 1757-1834, was the son of a Dumfriesshire shepherd. He apprenticed as a stone mason in Edinburgh but went on to supervise engineering projects throughout the United Kingdom and in Sweden.
