Shears

These two objects are iron shears from Viking graves. The top example is a much corroded fragment from a boy's grave found at Balnakeil near Durness in Sutherland. The better preserved example is from a woman's grave found at Westness on Rousay in Orkney.

Shears are found in some graves of Viking women and even occasionally those of children, generally along with other equipment used in the preparation of textiles. They are not found in men's graves.
