Grave goods (reconstruction)
Add to album

This picture shows reconstructions of some Viking grave goods associated with textiles and fishing. They were found in a boy's grave at Balnakeil near Durness in Sutherland along with adult weapons and various objects. The burial dates from sometime between 850 and 900.

Pictured here are a pumice stone, pair of iron shears, iron needles and a wooden needle divider bound with thread, and an iron fishhook and thread.

The actual objects were very corroded and fragmentary, but x-rays and other scientific analysis, together with comparisons to other better preserved examples, have been used for these reconstructions. Unusually, traces of organic materials such as the thread survived.
