This brass oval brooch was found on the eastern side of Thurso Bay in Caithness. It is a type worn by Scandinavian women between 900 and 1000, and may be from a grave whose other contents have eroded away. This picture shows the brooch from the side.
Like many oval brooches of the period, it was made from two shells. On the lower shell, eight ornamented rectangular fields were separated by raised panels. There are triangular stamps around the flanged rim shell.
Oval brooches are a very distinctive form of Viking women's ornaments, worn in pairs to fasten the straps of a pinafore. They were mass produced in Scandinavia and widely copied.
