This brass oval brooch was found on the eastern side of Thurso Bay in Caithness. It is a type worn by Scandinavian women between 900 and 1000, and may be from a grave whose other contents have eroded away.
Like many oval brooches of the period, it was made from two shells. The outermost shell was an openwork pattern with five projecting cast bosses. It is somewhat corroded.
Until the tenth century, Viking women appear to have worn a shift. A pinafore was worn over this, held up by shoulder straps, often with oval brooches anchoring the straps on each shoulder. Shawls were also worn, fastened by a different type of brooch.
