Brooch (side)

This brass oval brooch was found with its pair and a bronze trefoil brooch in a Norse woman's grave at Clibberswick on Unst in Shetland, together with some glass beads and a plain silver bracelet which are now lost. The burial dates from between 850 and 900.

This picture shows the side of the brooch. It shows the knobs, many of which are preserved, giving the brooch a profile of high relief. The brooch is worn and damaged on the edge.

In Scotland, the Vikings settled primarily in the Northern and Western Isles, as indicated by place names, hoards, and burials with distinctive grave goods. Steatite was quarried in Shetland by the Norse, some of it from Clibberswick.
