This plain baked clay bead was found in a Norse grave at Pierowall on Westray in Orkney. No details were recorded about the burial, but other grave goods included two knives, a sickle, a key, a bronze drinking horn mount and a number of rivets.

Ball

Beads occur in Norse graves of both men and women as single items, though these are generally larger and of more exotic materials, or strung on necklaces. Unfortunately, find details are too incomplete to determine if other beads were also found with this one.
