Add to albumThis detail shows the mark of Buchan's Pottery in Portobello in Midlothian. It is on the base of a stoneware lamp base made between around 1940 and 1960.
The impressed mark is in the form of a thistle and includes the text 'BUCHAN/PORTOBELLO/SCOTLAND'.
The area around Prestonpans, Prestongrange, West Pans, Musselburgh and Portobello remained a significant centre of pottery manufacture until the 1930s. However, the economic crisis of the inter-war years virtually destroyed the industry.
