Ship's bell, from H.M.S. Dartmouth

This bronze bell comes from H.M.S. Dartmouth, a Royal Navy warship wrecked in a storm in the Sound of Mull in 1690.

The bell has the date 1678 embossed on it, prefixed with the initials D H, those of its founder.

Force was used by the new King, King William III, to make reluctant Highlanders accept his rule. One of these campaigns was against the MacIains of Glencoe. HMS Dartmouth was sent to Mull to threaten the Castle of Maclean of Duart and to persuade him to sign an oath of loyalty. According to local traditions, the storm that wrecked the Dartmouth was raised by witchcraft.
