This wooden model represents the Thames sailing barge 'Thelma'. In 1901 'Thelma' was Thames Champion at the Thames Barge Regatta. The model is built to a scale of 1:48.
This type of barge was well-adapted for estuary work. It has a flat bottom and nearly vertical sides which enabled the vessel to enter water during shallow tide and remain upright on the mud while loading or unloading cargo. The boat also has a pair of leeboards - heavy boards pivoted to the sides of the boat which prevent it drifting sideways.
Like many other Thames craft, this style of barge has retained many medieval features such as the square stern and bilge.
