The plate is numbered 12. It illustrates a fancy dress costume whose French title translates literally as 'Decoy'. The dress is decorated with velvet skylarks and small mirrors and the the figure has skylarks in her hair.
The fancy dress ball and the 'Bal Masqué' originated around the time of the battle of Waterloo in 1815. They remained popular entertainment throughout the 19th and into the 20th century.
