These hand-blown glass bowls were made by the artists Annica Sandström and David Kaplan in 1979. The bowls formed part of the Scottish Crafts Collection, which was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland when the Scottish Craft Council was wound up.
Both bowls were made by wrapping a spiral of coloured glass around a coloured bubble. The spiral was then pulled to form a feathered pattern. After finishing, the surfaces of the bowls were sprayed while still warm with a reducing agent producing a iridescent finish.
David Kaplan was born in America, but studied glassmaking in Scotland and Sweden. He established Lindean Mill Glass in Galashiels in 1977 where he was joined by Swedish-born Annica Sandström a year later. With a small team of craftsmen, they produce a range of handmde glassware noted for its purity and simplicity.
