Stone (Fragment)
Add to album

This fragment of building stone was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was probably quarried and cut locally sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The inscription 'VR' has been chiselled in the stone.

The Roman army obtained supplies from three zones: locally (either by the army or natives), within the Roman province of Britannia, or further afield in the Roman empire.
