Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1880, the plate illustrates two day dresses. It is signed, 'Huard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.
The dress on the left reflects the current popular fashion for tied-back skirts, high necklines, pleated trimmings and demi-trains. The woman is carrying a parasol.
Sometimes parasols were made with a joint in the middle, so that the holder could be shielded from the sun at any angle. Small versions were also attached to carriages for use when driving.
