This is the obverse of a silver medal of the Edinburgh Skating Society. The medal was presented to James Home in 1792.
The obverse is inscribed, 'Edinburgh Skating Society/Jas. Home/1792.'
The cost of sporting equipment and limited access to land kept poorer people out of many sports. As incomes rose clubs were formed, organizing the use of grounds and increasing the amount of competition. By 1900 there were clubs for almost every sport.
